Hosting Options

Overview

Enterprise web services team offer multiple hosting options.

Sites can be developed using Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) or a content management system (CMS) such as WordPress.  The CMS Packages are much more robust compared to the HTML Only Package. CMS offers a simple and easy to use graphical interface that requires little to no prior knowledge of web development to utilize.

A container runs an isolated website on a shared set of servers.  Sites are normally hosted using the Universal WordPress Theme in a container.  All Sites using the Universal Theme share a single instance of WordPress.  Any site that can’t use the Universal Theme can run in a separate container using a separate instance of WordPress.

Alternatively, other custom hosting options are available.  Please reach out to [email protected] team to discuss these requirements and how they can be met.

Up to six weeks of backups are available with all options.

Pages Sites

Johns Hopkins students, faculty, and staff can request a free personal website.  These sites use HTML only.  The URL will use pages.jhu.edu and an individual’s Johns Hopkins Enterprise Directory ID. (Ex. https://pages.jhu.edu/~jhed)

Universal WordPress Theme

Student organizations, clubs, laboratories, university business units, and other university organizations can request a free templated site that conforms to university brand requirements. The Johns Hopkins Universal WordPress Theme is a free resource for Johns Hopkins University affiliates who are looking for a simple and editable solution that follows branding standards. Website owners can manage their own content, including navigation, header, pages, posts, forms, team member profiles, images, and PDFs.  Files are uploaded using the WordPress administrative facilities.

A preconfigured suite of themes and plugins is provided in this template. The option to install other themes and plugins is not available.

More information can be found at Universal WordPress Theme (jh.edu).
